Nonprofit Mission Connected Careers, Recruiting & Job Search | Q&A: How Do I Best Work With My Executive Recruiter?Q: This is my first time working with an executive recruiter.  Do you have any tips ?  I am young and relatively inexperienced at this whole job search thing, and I am anxious to find a great job.

A: Your recruiter is your best ally in the search process.  It only makes good sense to get to know your recruiter and to rely on him/her for process advice and guidance.  Even the most seasoned professionals sometimes need a heads-up or other suggestions while younger professionals benefit immensely from the guidance and advice a recruiter can share.

Consider the many ways a recruiter is beneficial. Of particular importance to the job seeker, the recruiter is often in possession of information that might be difficult or impossible to access on the Web or though public media especially if he or she is retained to conduct the search.  This information can give you knowledge of the organization, information as to whom you will meet and insight regarding the current organizational priorities, all of which can only enhance your presentation.

Also, as a recruiter understands the climate and culture of the organization you pursue, he or she can also be helpful guiding you through particulars of your search. For instance, if you have personal concerns that are difficult to broach in the formal interview process, your recruiter can help you to get answers without ruffling feathers. Additionally, a recruiter can help negotiate the right salary without committing obvious faux pas with the organization.

As beneficial as recruiters are to job seekers, it is important to understand there is a protocol for dealing with them:

  • Keep your recruiter up-to-date as to what is happening between you and the client organization.
  • Report any meetings, phone calls or other interactions.
  • Share your interview schedule freely if the recruiter is not the one organizing the call-backs and meetings.
  • Share your impressions, questions and feelings so your recruiter can give you direction and possibly provide explanations for circumstances you may not immediately understand.
  • Thank your recruiter for facilitating your interviews and presenting you to the client organization.

How you are presented makes a world of difference to how you are received. Do your part by living up to your end of the relationship so you can count on your recruiter to do everything possible to ensure your preparation and presentation are top notch.
