An Altruistic Shift: Transitioning from Business to Nonprofit Management

A trend has been taking place in the world of business, with consequences for the way nonprofit organizations recruit and grow. According to David E. Edell’s article ‘Transitioning From Business to the Nonprofit Sector’, an increasing number of working business professionals are moving or considering moving into the nonprofit sector, bringing their management skills and business expertise with them. One reason for this shift is a greater sense of satisfaction on the part of the professional, as shown in testimonies from individuals who state that they find nonprofit work to be more meaningful and transformative than corporate work.  Another given reason is the desire to meet a new challenge of management skills.

David E. Edell’s article assesses the most effective ways for people from the corporate world to make this shift successfully, stating that the most successful are those who make the shift due to a genuine interest in the nonprofit’s cause. On the basis of Mr. Edell’s observations, nonprofits looking to recruit and grow ought to keep an eye out for business professionals seeking to make this altruistic shift, and seek to provide them with forums to discuss the possibility of the shift. Another suggestion for nonprofits to help the transition process is allowing potential CEOS and managers to shadow the existing leaders in the nonprofits of interest. Mr. Edell goes into greater detail on these points and on the motives and experiences of CEOs and managers who have made this shift. Any nonprofit organization seeking to add talented and experience individuals to their team would benefit from taking his observations into consideration.
