Nonprofit Mission Connected Careers, Recruiting & Job Search | Pointers for Joining a Board: Non-Profit vs For-ProfitGaining membership in a board of directors is a complex process. The board, whether in a non-profit context or a corporate context, requires individuals of leadership and stamina, individuals willing to devote significant time and resources to the advancement of their cause and organization. In Nancy Collamer’s Forbes article ‘How to Get on a Board of Directors’, we see tips on what to expect during the recruitment process and specific ways in which joining a for-profit board and joining a non-profit board present different challenges.

Both types of organizations seek candidates with a variety of skills. In the case of a for-profit org, those skills tend to include demonstrated expertise in maintaining and growing a business or corporation.  As Collamer explains, these companies have a responsibility to make a profit for their shareholders. Skills in finance, legal, or crisis management are very important. Alternatively, non-profits prioritize fundraising and talent in public outreach and community relations. Having strong connections within the community beforehand is a major plus for anyone looking to join a non-profit board.

While these are some general pointers for what to expect in your search, Collamer also advises that potential candidates do their homework and investigate the specific goals and needs of the target organization. She recommends reading an organization’s proxy statement and researching the backgrounds and skills of board members who have already joined successfully. She also recommends tailoring one’s résumé based on this research, to put forward the skills and experience valued by the target organization. Finally, Collamer recommends utilizing one’s own professional network and acquiring referrals from high-ranking executives and board members in other respected organizations. Your resources and expertise matter.  With the right research and the right connections, you can make the best use of your skills and claim a leadership position on a board of directors.
