If you think your resume should be all about your experience and your accomplishments, then you’re not going to like what I have to tell you.

leader figureAs a job seeker looking for placement at the Executive level in the not-for-profit sector, it’s important to prove your worth in terms of accomplishments, but it’s even more important to shine a light on your soft skills — your ability to lead, to motivate and to communicate.

Think about your past career accomplishments. If it weren’t for the soft skills at work behind the scenes, would you have been as successful as you were?

The answer is: Probably not.

You see, your soft skills are just as important, if not moreso, as your collective education, training, and experience. Your ability to relate to others, to motivate your employees or team, and to get results is what sets you apart from every other applicant.

Ten years ago, hard skills were thought to be all a person needed to be a successful leader. However, given the way the job market and employment roles have evolved, its become necessary for managers and for those in leadership roles to have a well rounded skill set.

As you update your resume, don’t be afraid to show off the soft skills that helped you accomplish so much. For instance, did you have a record-breaking quarter? The unique ways you brought growth to a company should be showcased. You want to offer yourself as a complete package.

Showcasing these attributes in your resume and again in an interview can put you ahead of the game making you someone to remember when it comes to picking the next executive or leader.

The bottom line is while you’re showcasing your accomplishments, don’t forget to shine a light on your personal skills. Your soft skills could be the very traits that land you the job.
