I admit it’s been quite some time since I’ve been part of an active job search putting together my resume, sending it out, making that follow-up phone call to make sure the resume arrived …
See? I told you it’s been a while. That follow-up phone call suggestion wasn’t just a suggestion in my past searches; it was all but a directive in job-search protocol. Clearly, though, that notion is out the window (if not completely archaic)!
Karen Alphonse’s recent The Web Is Your Resume blog was a bit of an eye-opener to someone not currently active in the game in terms of the degree to which the job search resources and strategies have changed even in the past decade. At what point would any of us have predicted someone could be offered a job without having submitted a resume at all? (That certainly would have taken the pain not only out of the obsessive proofreading I invested in my resume but also the agony I felt when I realized I’d just mailed – yes, USPS mail – more than 15 resumes with a big, fat typo … anyone else recall that pain?)
While the onus is most definitely on the job seeker to take the bull by the horns and be in charge of his or her own job search, the fact is, more and more people are also being found … and pretty easily.
Perhaps you don’t know there’s “a difference out there” in the job search realm because you entered the experience in much the same, high-tech, easy-access way it exists now. Or, perhaps you, too, pounded out your resume on something one step above a typewriter and put it in the mail with a stamp.
Either way, I’m certain you, our readers and followers, have experiences that can help keep all of us up-to-speed on what is happening out there. Have you, too, been hired without having submitted a resume? How did that come about? Have you ever been contacted by a recruiter or hiring manager even though you weren’t actively looking for a position (or for that position)? In what way were you contacted? Phone? Tweet? Personal Website? Email? (C’mon, people still email … right?)
We want to know what’s going on out there, and I’d love if you dropped us your story! It doesn’t have to be long, just a few sentences letting us know how you were logging on to your favorite social networking site one day when you retrieved a message from your inbox telling you …
Your experience, from the smallest tid-bit to an involved story, is most definitely going to teach someone else how to best prepare for a search and how to stay on top of today’s game. Share your story with us here, or visit our Facebook page to answer today’s question!
I, for one, can’t wait to find out what I don’t know!
