Q: Recently, I have been conducting numerous Skype interviews. This coming week, I will have one based on a case study. Do you have any tips on how to conduct this meeting? There is a lot hanging in the balance, and I need to get this right.
A: This is a case where practice will make perfect, and there are definitely steps to take to make it your best presentation. First, get your materials together as early as you can. Do so several days before the presentation for ample preparation. Solicit and incorporate all feedback you receive about the substance of your case study before the presentation.
Then, practice. Use the same medium you will use for your Skype meeting. Be in the very same room using the very same computer. Have colleagues or friends sign on and listen to you go over the presentation. Then, solicit their feedback. If they see areas for improvement, it is likely your interviewers will, too. The more you rehearse, the more relaxed and polished you will be on the day you “go live.”
On the day of the actual presentation, give yourself ample time to get ready for the camera. Schedule enough lead time to be at ease and settled in before signing on. Also, leave extra time at the end in case your interviewers have additional questions or are enjoying the presentation so much they run over the appointed time. Be ready, and be great.
