Where On the Map

imagesCAA6D8X7Q:  I am an international development professional.  I have worked many years on economic development issues for NGOs in Eastern Europe and Africa. It’s time for me to launch myself as a leader.

I just saw a Director role that has been posted for two locations,  Tanzania and South Africa.  Both roles look alike.  However, the role in South Africa pays almost double that of the other.  As well, the South Africa office seems to be the organization’s headquarters.  I am interested in both.  Please advise.

A:  You did not disclose whether you have any particular ties to either location.  If you had family in one place or the other, that is a factor to consider. However, all other social issues aside, go with the location that offers the most visible leadership opportunity and is receiving the most funding.

Consider this: Funding provides important clues as to the overall well-being and viability of the organization.  It also sets up a pathway for your success.  Funding means possibilities.  It means innovative programs.  It also probably means a stable staff, professional development opportunities and sustainability.  All of this translates into long-term opportunity and potential for your personal and professional growth.  None of this is inconsequential.

The likely reason for the salary discrepancy is that the South Africa venue is receiving more funding to conduct outreach and build programs.  This may also mean South Africa is a more costly location in terms of cost of living or other factors, but, even so, funders are giving it more sponsorship/consideration.

As you build your career, it helps to associate with the movers and shakers.  Frequently, venue matters in terms of attracting such personnel.  The well-funded hub should give you opportunities to make important connections and build a platform for success.  The relative financial stability of the South Africa office indicates it is in a better position vis-à-vis sponsors and the development community.  You will, therefore, be more visible and more likely to meet real leaders in the field.  If you are truly interested in gaining more cutting edge experience and becoming affiliated with leaders, pick the better-funded venue.
