There is encouraging news for nonprofits. Millennials (twenty-something to thirty-something year olds) often seek alignment to a cause while defining their career choices. Organizations that are cause-based definitely have the advantage when Millennials shop for jobs.

Millennials are slowly making their impact on the workplace. What does this mean for nonprofit organizations? The summation of the “2014 Millennial Impact Report” by the Eleventy Group has insights that may help established organizations effectively recruit, retain and develop Millennials.

In the blog post “14 Reasons Your Nonprofit Should Be Engaging Millennials At Work,” a number of important statistics were outlined including the finding that “A company’s involvement with causes ranked as the 3rd most important factor when applying for a job.” In addition, the discussion of cause work during an interview influenced 55% of Millennials to accept a position.

Also included in the report is that, once employed, Millennials, men and women combined, report an appreciation of cause work that benefits their community. It is noted that of the various sources available to learn about a company’s cause work, including Web searching, social media and networking, the company’s own website tops the list of useful resources.

According to Eleventy Marketing Group, “Connecting with Millennials is important to the future of your nonprofit. It’s essential to build a bond with individuals from this generation early, when they may not yet have allegiances to very many causes or organizations.”

The ability to act on a cause in the workplace is extremely attractive to Millennials. Nonprofits are uniquely positioned to bridge the desire to attach to the cause and the desire for employment. Suggestions for building such a bridge are included in the linked blog post.
