What ‘Entrepreneur’ Really Means

In a world of fast fixes and articles that focus on a “get rich quick” business angle, Stephen Key offers his version of the tell-it-like-it-is breakdown of what it means to be an entrepreneur in his article, “11 Truths About Being an Entrepreneur.” Key, a 30-year entrepreneur, offers insights helpful to all of those just getting started on their own ventures. Such insights included stressing that success will take longer than it seems it should as well as a reminder that not only are sacrifices going to be necessary for success, but also, he specifies, that time is one of those sacrifices.

His list can be a bit discouraging to one who is fired up about starting a business and wants to jump right in without thinking through all that necessary prep work. He notes a flexible mindset is important for entrepreneurs as well as the importance of gaining and weighing input from many sources.

The article also offers insights into key questions such as answering what success actually means for a new venture. By reading Key’s article, it can be understood success is defined in a host of different ways from turning a profit for the first time to launching a great, interactive squarespace.

The overarching message: Aim high, but be pragmatic about the business and your team. “[F]ocus on creating a business that has a great culture” and you will probably be on track for success.  The eleven specific points from Key can help achieve that goal.
