Q&A: What Should I Consider For an International Relocation?

by | Jul 10, 2012 | Advice, Featured, Job Seekers | 0 comments

imagesCA793SGKQ:  I live in Portugal and want to relocate to the United States.  I work for an international educational and economic development organization. My spouse is a physician and has limited English speaking skills.  I am fluent in English.  However, it has been a while since either of us lived in an English-speaking territory.  What do you advise?

A: Apart from the obvious language barrier, I recommend you check out opportunities in Great Britain before heading to the United States.  The UK is part of the EEU and has reciprocity agreements with other nations, including Portugal, which gives your spouse the opportunity to further her career.

After a respectable period in the UK, seek out opportunities on the East Coast of the United States after verifying applicable board requirements for your spouse.  Given your own educational leadership background, there will be school reform, think-tank and foundation opportunities of interest to you. By this time, your wife’s fluency in English would be greatly enhanced by the stint in the UK, and she can manage her admissions requirements enabling her to continue her career as a physician without too much disruption.
