Understanding the Nonprofit Finance Manager Role

A nonprofit finance manager role goes by many names, such as Finance Manager, Director of Finance, Controller, Director of Finance and Administration, or even CFO in some organizations, but the heart of the job is the same: steward the organization’s financial health so the mission can thrive. This leader keeps the numbers accurate, the cash stable, and the board confident, while helping the CEO and senior team make sound decisions in a challenging funding environment.

What to call the role

Different nonprofits use different titles for essentially the same leadership seat in finance. You will most often see:

  • Finance Manager
  • Director of Finance or Finance Director
  • Controller or Nonprofit Controller
  • Director of Finance and Administration or VP Finance
  • Chief Financial Officer (CFO) in smaller organizations where one person covers both strategic finance and day to day accounting

In a smaller nonprofit, a Finance Manager or Controller may function as the de facto CFO, carrying both the hands on accounting and the strategic advisory work. For organizations considering part-time executive finance support, learn more about fractional CFO services for nonprofits. In larger organizations, that work is split between a CFO at the top and one or more managers or directors who oversee accounting, reporting, and planning teams.
