Geneva is where the multilateral system does its daily work, and the job market follows from that. The Swiss Mission to the UN in Geneva counts 42 international institutions and organizations in the city itself, about 750 NGOs, and the permanent representations of 185 member states. Some 33,000 people work in International Geneva around the lake, from diplomats to civil servants.
This guide covers who hires in Geneva and what UN pay looks like. It also covers what the permit and language rules actually say, and where the openings are posted. Every employer below links to its own careers page, and every figure links to the source that published it.

The short version
Who hires nonprofit and NGO leaders in Geneva?
Start with the UN Office at Geneva and the UN agencies based in the city. Add the WTO, the ICRC, the IFRC and the global health partnerships, then a long tail of NGOs and academic institutes. The Swiss Mission’s own count is 42 international bodies and roughly 750 NGOs in the city.
How is UN pay structured in Geneva?
Professional staff are paid on one worldwide salary scale set by the UN General Assembly on the recommendation of the International Civil Service Commission (ICSC). A post adjustment for the cost of living in the duty station is added on top. On the current scale, a P-4 starts at a net base salary of $86,027 a year and a P-5 at $103,165, before the Geneva post adjustment.
Do staff of international organizations need a Swiss work permit?
Usually not. The Swiss Federal Department of Foreign Affairs issues them a legitimation card, which counts as a Swiss residence permit and exempts the holder from visa requirements for as long as the job lasts. It also certifies any privileges and immunities. Whether a given employer’s staff qualify depends on that employer’s status with the Swiss authorities, so ask the employer before you assume.
Do you need French to work in Geneva?
Inside the organizations, each employer sets the rule. The UN’s Young Professionals exam asks for fluency in English or French, and the WTO works in English, French and Spanish. Outside them, French is the official language of the canton under its constitution, and plenty of Geneva postings are written in French from the first line.
Who is actually hiring
Geneva employers fall into five groups, and they recruit in different ways and on different clocks.
The UN Office at Geneva and the UN agencies. The UN Geneva directory lists the UN entities working in the city. The large ones each run their own recruitment:
- UN Office at Geneva (UNOG) 路 UN Secretariat posts, filled through UN Careers
- World Health Organization (WHO) 路 headquarters on Avenue Appia
- ILO 路 labor standards and social protection
- UNHCR 路 the UN Refugee Agency
- OHCHR 路 the UN Human Rights Office
- IOM 路 the UN migration agency
- WIPO 路 intellectual property
- ITU 路 telecommunications, in Geneva since 1948
- UNCTAD 路 trade and development
- UNAIDS 路 the joint UN program on HIV and AIDS
- WMO 路 weather and climate
The World Trade Organization. Not a UN agency, and it recruits on its own. The WTO careers page describes a staff of more than 600 from about 90 countries, all at the headquarters by the lake.
The Red Cross movement. The Swiss Mission dates International Geneva from the founding of the Red Cross in 1863. Both of the movement’s international bodies hire here.
- International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) 路 its careers site runs in English and French. ExecSearches currently lists an ICRC finance role in Geneva, advertised in French.
- International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) 路 headquarters in Petit-Saconnex
Global health partnerships. Geneva holds a cluster of health organizations that sit outside the UN but work alongside WHO.
- The Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria 路 Global Health Campus, Grand-Saconnex
- Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance 路 offices in Geneva and Washington, DC
- DNDi 路 drug research for neglected diseases
- FIND 路 diagnostics
Academic institutes and specialist centers. Smaller employers, often with senior roles in research management and fundraising.
- Geneva Graduate Institute 路 international relations and development studies
- DCAF 路 security sector governance, with staff of more than 44 nationalities
Language, in practice
There is no single Geneva rule. Article 5 of the cantonal constitution makes French the official language, so anything touching the canton or local partners runs in French. Inside the organizations, the job posting is the authority. Read the language section of each vacancy rather than guessing, because “English required, French an asset” and “English and French required” lead to different shortlists.
Our view: for a senior role in Geneva, working French is worth more than it looks on paper. It rarely decides who gets an interview. It often decides who gets the job.
Permits and status
This is general information from official sources, not legal advice. Your employer’s HR team, and the Swiss authorities, have the final word.
- Staff of international organizations. The Swiss Mission’s legitimation card guidelines cover staff of permanent missions and international organizations. The card counts as a residence permit for Switzerland and exempts the holder from visa requirements for the duration of the function.
- EU and EFTA citizens working for other employers fall under the free movement of persons agreement between Switzerland and the EU and EFTA.
- Everyone else can be admitted to the Swiss labor market only as highly qualified workers, which the State Secretariat for Migration says normally means a university degree plus several years of experience. Annual quotas apply.
What it pays
UN pay for professional staff has two parts: a net base salary from the ICSC scale, which is the same worldwide, and a post adjustment that the ICSC sets for each duty station to account for local prices, inflation, exchange rates and spending patterns. The table shows step I of each grade on the scale effective January 1, 2026. Geneva take-home pay is higher once the post adjustment is added.
| Grade | Net base salary, step I (US$ a year) | Source |
|---|---|---|
| P-3 | 71,335 | ICSC salary scale |
| P-4 | 86,027 | ICSC salary scale |
| P-5 | 103,165 | ICSC salary scale |
| D-1 | 117,953 | ICSC salary scale |
| D-2 | 130,477 | ICSC salary scale |
How to read this table. These are UN common system figures, so they apply to the UN agencies above. NGOs and the Red Cross movement set their own pay. For a sense of the wider Swiss market, the Federal Statistical Office puts the national gross median wage for a full-time job at CHF 7,024 a month in 2024, covering private and public employers together, in a release dated November 25, 2025.
What the jobs are called
- P-1 to P-5: the UN professional grades, each with its own steps.
- D-1 and D-2: director grades.
- ASG and USG: Assistant Secretary-General and Under-Secretary-General, the top of the scale.
- Young Professionals (YPP): the competitive exam that fills entry-level professional posts in the UN Secretariat. Candidates must be 32 or younger.
- Junior Professional Officer (JPO): early-career posts funded by donor governments under bilateral agreements.
- Consultant, individual contractor: short-term expert contracts for a specific project.
- Secretary General, Director General, Head of Office: the chief executive titles you will see at NGOs and smaller international bodies.
Where the openings are posted
UNOG and OHCHR jobs are UN Secretariat jobs, so start at UN Careers. The specialized agencies post on their own portals, linked above. Each vacancy announcement tells you exactly how that agency selects. Impactpool lists UN and NGO openings side by side and is a useful second check.
For senior roles at NGOs and foundations, the search firm route matters more. Two firms with a verified Geneva presence:
- Egon Zehnder, Geneva 路 office on Rue du G茅n茅ral-Dufour; its Public and Social Sector practice includes a development group
- Page Executive Switzerland 路 Geneva office at Pont-Rouge in Lancy. Its Swiss research lead lists a Secretary General search for a Geneva-based NGO among his mandates.
Open roles
Senior nonprofit and international roles are listed on ExecSearches.com, each one read by a person before it goes live. If you are weighing Geneva against Brussels, our Brussels guide covers the city where EU-facing advocacy sits. The companion Luxembourg guide covers the EU courts and the Grand Duchy’s NGOs.
