I spend a lot of time listening and learning. This is my growing listening shelf: audiobooks about leadership, careers, technology, and the ideas shaping our work. I mark what I am listening to now separately from the books I have finished and recommend.

AI Engineering: Building Applications with Foundation Models
This book is about AI engineering: building applications on top of foundation models that already exist, instead of training a model from scratch. Huyen explains how that work differs from traditional machine learning engineering, then covers choosing a model, evaluating whether an application actually works, and designing the system and feedback loops around it.
It is useful for anyone who reviews or oversees AI applications and wants to understand how they are put together, including governance, risk, audit and compliance professionals.
I’m listening to AI Engineering: Building Applications with Foundation Models by Chip Huyen. It explores how existing AI models become useful applications, from choosing a use case to building the system around it. For those of us working in AI governance, understanding how these applications are built helps us ask better questions about their risks and reliability. Listen along with me.
Why this shelf
My work runs from nonprofit executive search at ExecSearches to GRC Careers, where we cover careers in AI governance, risk and compliance. These books feed that work. If you are coming at AI from the governance side, start with From Mission-Driven Work to AI Governance. For the technical picture, see How to Build an AI Agent: The 8-Step Field Guide and Why AI Assistants Feel So Different.
I will add books here as I finish them and as I start new ones.
